Coahuila has registered the highest average length of stay in private hospitals across Mexico, according to recent figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). While the national average stands at 2.1 days, patients in Coahuila remain hospitalized for an average of three days, raising serious concerns regarding healthcare costs and administrative practices.
This statistic has sparked intense debate among local and national lawmakers. Federal Deputy Jericó Abramo Masso has pushed for a legislative reform aimed at curbing what many perceive as arbitrary retention practices by private medical centers. The proposed legal amendment seeks to prevent private clinics from keeping patients hospitalized longer than clinically necessary simply to inflate billing.
Additionally, the reform would prohibit hospitals from holding patients or withholding medical certificates as a means to force payment. Consumer protection organizations have noted consistent complaints from citizens who face disproportionately high bills due to prolonged hospital stays that lack clear medical justification.
The issue highlights a systemic challenge in the state's private healthcare sector, where the lack of stringent regulatory oversight has left patients vulnerable to predatory financial practices.
